Rhapsody is powered by a W30 Westerbeke 4 cylinder diesel engine turning a Westerbeke "short sailing" transmission, then a 1 1/4" shaft, then a 14x16 (?) right-hand bronze 3-bladed propeller.

  1. Interesting. The engine oil filter, secondary fuel and a few other items are identical to my old Westerbeke W-52, which is a larger engine.

    That shaft and prop are pretty big for a 32 footer. Plenty of torque, too. You might want to consider a feathering prop if the aperture can handle it.

  2. The Fram PH-8A is a widely-used filter - most (all?) old Ford pickups use it, for example. (I bet there's still a couple in the barn at my Mom's place!)

    There was no nostalgia involved in the fuel filter number, but it's not surprising that it's shared as well. These things were built back in the days before manufacturers figured out they could make a lot more money if they changed everything every couple model years.

    While the idea of a feathering prop is appealing, there's also a certain bit of confidence in having a big solid hunk of bronze that's simply always going to work down there.
